first_img14 March 2012 South Africa is seeking international funding for its multi-billion rand water infrastructure building plans, Deputy Water Affairs Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi said at the World Water Forum (WWF) in Marseille, France on Tuesday.“We’ve got countries coming forward and offering us technology. They’re saying they’d like to partner with us,” Mabudafhasi said after opening a joint South Africa-Lesotho display at the WWF.Asked if South Africa was hoping to attract foreign capital for its plan to spend more than R60-billion on water infrastructure over the next three years, she said: “Yes, that is why we have this stand. We need funding for infrastructure.”Mabudafhasi declined to reveal any details, or to say whether a big deal was imminent. “We are still talking,” she told Sapa. The display-stand at the WWF includes a backdrop photograph of the giant Khatse Dam in Lesotho, the main reservoir for the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP).One of the biggest projects in the worldThe project, one of the biggest of its kind in the world, supplies water from Lesotho to South Africa’s industrial heartland, Gauteng.Phase two of the project, which includes the building of a second big dam in Lesotho, as well as the boring of a 38km-long tunnel, is set to start supplying water in July 2020. It will cost an estimated R15.4-billion.Cutting a ribbon to officially open the display, Mabudafhasi described the LHWP as a “classic example” of how to manage water across a border.“Both countries benefit from the water that flows from the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. It’s a classical example of [trans-border] water management.”Lesotho benefited from the revenue it received, and from the jobs the project had created in that country; South Africa benefited from an assured supply of water for Gauteng.Posing for photographs with officials from the Lesotho Highlands Water Commission, the deputy minister assured them: “We won’t waste a drop.”Growing demand for waterShe also noted that urban migration and ageing infrastructure had put a strain on the delivery of water and the provision of sanitation in South Africa.Supplying rural areas and meeting the demands of the country’s growing economy were also contributing factors.Asked to comment on forecasts of a water crunch in South Africa about a decade from now, she said: “We’re very confident our water won’t get finished.”The exhibition hall where she was speaking had a water problem of its own around midday on Tuesday. While several of the country stands inside the hall displayed dozens of ingenious water and sanitation devices, a queue was forming outside the door of the venue’s single, three-toilet restroom.Sapalast_img read more

Expand Your Search Universe With Drag and Drop Zones

first_imgmarshall kirkpatrick Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img Related Posts Tags:#How To#web Search is a versatile tool, but if you’ve had a hard time integrating all the awesome niche search engines available into your workflow (Google is so easy to access!) then the following instructions might be perfect for you.I’ve put together a multi-step process that uses two Firefox plug-ins and some other tools to create a powerful visual dashboard of search engines you can query quickly by dragging and dropping any words on a page into it. The drag and drop comes in the form of a great plug-in called Drag and Drop Zones, but taking a few extra steps makes that tool much more powerful. The Drag and Drop Zones plug-in displays an overlay of squares that you can drag any highlighted words into to search in an engine of your choice. It’s a much easier way to access search engines than just adding them to the drop down menu in your search bar. I never use the search engines I’ve put in there, but now this interface makes it easy. Mine is blue, but you can make it whatever color you like. Here are the steps I followed to set up my zones.1. Add the Drag and Drop Zones Plug-inDrag and Drop Zones is a recommended Firefox plug-in that works great, but requires that you’ve got some good search engines added already to your search bar.2. Install the Add to Search Bar Plug-inThe Add to Search Bar plug-in makes it really easy to add any site’s search engine to your browser’s search bar. Depending on which version of Firefox you’re using you may need to turn off plug-in compatibility checking.Once you’ve got it installed, right click in any search box and select “add to search bar.”3. Get Yourself Some Good Search EnginesWhat are you going to add to your new search interface? Here are some of the things I put in mine.Google Custom Search Engines are great, I’ve got more than 30 of them that I try to use as often as I can but I expect this interface will make it even easier to do so. Think of them as a living reference book, made up of the top sources you select on any topic. Perhaps you’d like to have a drag and drop search of Top Gen Y Blogs, Top Open Web Blogs or Blogs Written by Women in Tech. (Let me know if you’d like your blog added to any of those, by the way.)FriendFeed is an aggregation of all kinds of social media activity feeds. We love the service and its search engine is a great place to keep track of your blog posts and other topics. The ability to search across all users isn’t immediately exposed on the site but you can visit a page like this and add that search box to your search bar.Flickr Creative Commons is a great place to look for images you can freely reuse with attribution. Other engines I’ve added to my field of options include blog search, Delicious and Twitter. Of course I added the search bar from here on ReadWriteWeb as well. The possibilities are truly infinite.4. Add and Arrange Your Search Engines Into the Drag and Drop ZonesNow click on the Tools menu in your browser and you’ll see the option to place the search engine links wherever you like on the page, as well as some additional functionality and options. Once you’ve got your settings set up, you will probably have to restart Firefox to see them put into action. Once you’ve done that, just highlight any word on any page, click and drag. There you go, a whole new search universe. If you like this plug-in you might like the author’s whole suite of tools called Web Search Pro.I’m seeing more use of my search engines right away but there are always smarter ways to search the web. Do readers have favorite search engines you’d like to add to an interface like this?Title image from the Firefox add-on Facebook app, read more

AOL Is Building A MapQuest Social Network Called mqVibe

first_imgTags:#AOL#Location#web The original Internet behemoth purchased, and this year. All of those domains point to the new “coming soon” page. AOL also registered a big portfolio of trademarks for each of these domains that indicate a location-based social networking service. Here’s a selection:Serial Number: 85419192Online social networking services; online local and community social networking servicesSerial Number: 85419185Providing a website that enables users to connect with people in a particular neighborhood or city; Providing user-defined content and content of others selected and customized based on the known or estimated geographical location of usersSerial Number: 85419176Providing neighborhood and community information in the fields of education, entertainment, local events and activities, current events, shopping, arts, culture, and sports; Providing information about community and neighborhood livabilitySerial Number: 85419162Providing geographic information, destination information, interactive maps, and driving directions via computer and communications networks; Providing information, news, and commentary in the field of travel via computer and communications networksSerial Number: 85419151Providing information and news in the field of local businessNow that we have a hint on the MapQuest website, it looks like we can expect a map-powered social network that combines location-based services for individuals, local news, information, entertainment and shopping, and travel directions like those MapQuest already offers. This is a space Google, Facebook, Foursquare, Yelp and others are all vying to control. AOL has been silent about this, but it’s strongly positioned to make this play.Google Maps may rule the roost, but MapQuest is good technology. Moreover, Patch, AOL’s network of local news sites, is dying for a sustainable business model. AOL launched a daily deals platform tied to Patch in June, and a map-powered social news network would be an ideal place to market it. AOL has all the pieces it needs to build this thing. It just needs to put them together. Can AOL Outdo Google? It will need to do it well, though. Google is going wild in all of these areas. It bought The Dealmap to integrate its own daily deals into its Maps product, and it keeps expanding Google Offers to more markets. It bought Zagat to provide content for local business guides, a shot across the bow at Yelp. And Google’s even going where AOL can’t by pushing NFC payments for smartphones with Google Wallet, which would close the payments loop on all of these local business plays. If AOL is going to win this game, it has to swing for the fences. Thanks very much to Fusible for threeexcellentscoops on the domain purchases and trademark applications.Do you think AOL has a shot with its mqVibe neighborhood social network? Sound off in the comments. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Something cool is coming to your neighborhood. AOL appears to be preparing us for some kind of neighborhood-based social network built around MapQuest (remember them?). It has registered a bunch of domains this year that all point to a page that says something called “mqVibe” is coming soon.Earlier this month, we reported on a slew of domain name purchases and trademark applications that indicated some kind of AOL social network was in the works. At the time, we figured it could have just been speculative. But no, it looks like AOL is serious. MapQuest will be the hub of AOL’s effort to get on the social networking map.
