Acting Forest Officer responsible for Research and Monitoring, Steven Durand told Vibes News in an interview last week the department is now unable to efficiently conduct its work. “What the looting has done it has affected the work in a lot of ways so we are not able to do the things we need to do we lack certain things we wish that things we different in terms of support we do not have vehicles to help us, we are at a setback of what the storm and the looters did,” he lamented. Durand said the Forestry Division “suffered tremendously” at the hands of the looters as most of their chainsaws, brush cutters, wheelbarrows and tools which were used by the gardeners. He added that there is still a lot of work to be done at the Botanical Gardens however equipment is not readily available to the workers due to the looting.center_img Share Sharing is caring! The case for Matt Wieters — revisited

first_imgPhoto: Greg MacIn my first post with Maryland Sports Blog, I had five simple words for the Baltimore front office regarding Matt Wieters:Give him what he wants.I stand by that comment.  Nowhere in Major League Baseball will you find a more complete catcher.  He’s a top-notch hitter.  He fields the ball cleanly.  Would-be base stealers either stay at 1st or trot to the dugout in shame. Matt calls a good game. And he has one intangible that cannot be measured by statistics:  leadership.Ever since the “phenom” joined the organization, pitchers were calmer on the mound.  Wieters was able to maintain a good pace with the pitcher, understand the batters, and relay signals from the dugout without missing anything on the field.  He never demanded respect.  He commanded it.Before considering him for trade or letting him go in the off-season, Dan Duquette would be better off retooling the entire starting rotation before giving up the best backstop in baseball.  Here’s wishing Matt a full, speedy, and healthy recovery after a successful surgery.  Yes, I believe prayer works.  Praying for a well-guided doctor performing surgery is something to do as well. Please follow and like us:last_img read more

Ravens Football is back and boy has it been a long offseason

first_img*Walks from out of my cave to The Rock’s intro music*The last time anyone heard from me, I was predicting a Ravens win over the Cincinatti Bengals in week 17 which would have got us back in the playoffs for the first time since the 2014 season. We all know how that night ended so there’s no need to go into detail. But in the good words of our friend Annie, “The sun come out tomorrow.” A new beginning with a new look offense has me and the rest of Ravens Nation excited for a new season which kicks off tomorrow with the Hall of Fame game in Canton against the Chicago Bears. While there’s a lot of buzz around the future of Joe Flacco and the emergence of rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson, I am more focused on the new receiving group led by Michael Crabtree. This is easily the best group of receivers Joe Flacco has had at his arsenal since the 2012 super bowl winning year. Michael Crabtree who is a great possession receiver and red zone threat similar to the likes of Anquan Boldin, is the clear cut number one option. He’s coming off a year where he gained a career low 618 receiving yards but still managed to grab 8 touchdowns. The yardage doesn’t come as a alarm for two reasons; first being that has never been his game. Crabtree has only 2 seasons, out of his 10 in the league, in which he’s gone over 1,000 yards. His role has been to go over the middle and make the tough catches to move the chain, and most of all be the great red zone threat that he’s been. Both of those qualities (especially the latter) will be a big help to a passing offense that has been mediocre at best since the start of the 2015 season. Pair that with deep threat John Brown and route running extraordinaire Willie Snead IV, along with big body rookie tight end Hayden Hurst Joe has no reason to struggle barring injury.Speaking of injury the quality of players the Ravens have returning from season ending injuries is second to none. Starting with perennial all-pro Marshal Yanda; Yanda was lost for the year in a week 2 game against the Cleveland Browns and even though the Ravens did a great job stepping up by committee his presence is one that cant be replaced. Yanda’s return not only gives the run game and interior pass protection a boost, but it also allows everyone to go back to their natural positions, which was a rarity for the o-line last season. Also returning from injury are corner backs Jimmy Smith and Tavon Young. Smith was lost in December to another achilles injury and served an 4 game suspension. Prior to that, he was having a career year. Pro Football Focus had Smith as one of the highest rated corners after allowing only a 49.2 quarterback rating when targeted. So his return will be huge if he can get back to form by week 1. Tavon Young is returning after missing all of the 2017 season to a ACL tear in mini camp. Tavon Young was drafted primarily to be the 3rd corner in the often used nickel package in today’s pass-happy league. But during his rookie season, he rose up the depth chart to being the 2nd corner opposite of Jimmy Smith and he had a great year. Young is returning to his natural position and he’s looking forward to it recently saying, “The slot is where all the action is, you have to help on the run and cover slot receivers.” His return along with the rest of the group that didn’t finish last year like Nico Siragusa, Kenneth Dixon, and Alex Lewis will be a great sight. Please follow and like us:last_img read more

Volunteers and boats needed for Galway Bay Swim

first_imgI’ve Got Your Back: Debra Coffey, Co. Clare, Norma Carty, Wexford and Claire McLoughlin, Galway pictured at the Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim for Cancer Care West.Photo : Murtography Each swimmer needs a boat to follow and track their swim, organisers are again this year asking any boat owner to get in contact with the hope they can volunteer their services on the day. The most suitable boat type is a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat ) fitted with an outboard engine and we are again asking people to help support the swimmers in this year’s swim across the Bay, “explained Ciaran Oliver of Galway Bay Boat Tours.Ciaran went onto say, ‘ideally we are looking for Ribs and small motor boats, but any other suitable pleasure craft between 5 and 8 metres would be considered.  However we are urging people to get in touch and we can then pull together resources from what we have and ensure that this swim is again a safety success.”The swim which is now sold out will see close to 130 swimmers taking part this year it is now one of Ireland’s biggest and longest one day swims. Starting from Auginish in Co. Clare and finishing at Blackrock Diving Tower in Salthill, the swim is a distance of roughly 13 kilometres….if you swim straight. This year there will be 65 solo swimmers and 65 relay swimmers taking part in teams of 2,3 and 4 swimmers. Since the swim began 13 years ago, 569 people have swum the Bay and this year again it will be a mixture of swimmers who have completed the swim every year and complete novices.Last year’s swim raised €108,000 for Cancer Care West and we are hoping to beat that this year. The monies raised will help fund the expansion of our support services for cancer patients including a counselling service for children and a dedicated gym rehabilitation space for cancer patients. The Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim will take place on Saturday July 21st. People are invited to go down to Blackrock diving tower, Salthill to welcome the swimmers home from 12 Noon.To volunteer or for more details check out or on Now in its 13th year, the Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim in aid of Cancer Care West returns to the waters of Galway Bay this July. Safety is a priority for the swim, each year the event reaches out to the maritime community in the west to support the swim through boat support. The annual Galway Bay Swim which will take place on Saturday 21st July is looking for volunteers and boats to assist in this year’s race. I’ve Got Your Back: Debra Coffey, Co. What Should a Digital Public Library of America Look Like?

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… The public library may be one of this nation’s most important cultural and civic institutions. Yet it faces a number of threats – budget crises at the state and local level and the shift in the publishing industry from print to digital books. Of course, the library is more than just a repository for books – paper or otherwise. And even as libraries move to embrace more digital content, the local library will (hopefully) persist as a community center and as a portal to Internet resources. But efforts are underway to create a DIgital Public Library of America, an online library . The project’s steering committee have announced a “beta sprint,” asking people to weigh in on what they think this library should look like. Librarians, archivists, developers, and the general public have been asked to contribute “ideas, models, prototypes, technical tools, user interfaces,” and so on to the project, helping design how the DPLA might index and provide access to the digital content.Geeks and Librarians Joining Forces“We hope geeks and librarians, especially, will join forces to develop beta submissions in support of this initiative,” says John Palfrey, the director of the steering committee and co-director of Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. The Berkman Center has been coordinating the planning of the Digital Public Library of America, and other members of the steering committee include representatives from the Library of Congress, the Internet Archive, and academic and public libraries. As the call for submissions for this beta sprint suggest, the design of the DPLA is still very much under review. There are several models for what it could look like, including the Internet Archive and Europeana, the European Union’s online cultural archives. The Challenges of a Digital Public LibraryBut designing a digital public library will be no easy task, as many libraries and publishers are already finding themselves at odds over what exactly access and lending policies will be with electronic content. Furthermore, some interpreted the recent Google Books settlement (or rather, the federal judge Denny Chin’s decision to throw out the Google Books settlement) as a sign that the road ahead for digitization efforts is still full of legal obstacles. However, Judge Chin himself commented that “the digitization of books and the creation of a universal digital library would benefit many.” But a digital public library is quite a different thing than what Google has undertaken with its attempts to digitize every book ever printed. After all, a digital library won’t be just about storing content, but it will be about making that content accessible. Those interested in taking part in the Digital Public Library of America’s beta spring must submit a statement of interest by June 15. Final submissions are due by September 1.Photo credits: via Flickr user eflon Related Posts Tags:#E-Books#web audrey watterscenter_img A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more
